Just two weeks after BYD<\/strong> revealed its groundbreaking 1 Megawatt EV charger<\/strong>, ZEEKR<\/strong> has stepped up with an even more powerful announcement: a 1.2 Megawatt (MW)<\/strong> fast charger. The Chinese automaker\u2019s new charging system\u2014set to debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in late April<\/strong>\u2014is now poised to become the most powerful EV charger in the world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, BYD made headlines by showcasing its \u201cSuper E-Platform\u201d<\/strong> and promising 1,000 kW (1 MW)<\/strong> charge speeds. The goal was clear: enable EV charging speeds that rival refueling times at gas stations. In real-world terms, BYD claims its 1 MW charger can deliver up to 2 kilometers of range per second<\/strong>, adding around 400 km (249 miles)<\/strong> in just five minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, BYD’s dominance was short-lived. During the recent China EV100 Forum<\/strong>, ZEEKR\u2019s Vice President Zhao Yuhui<\/strong> publicly unveiled details of the company’s latest breakthrough\u2014a fully liquid-cooled EV fast charger<\/strong> capable of 1.2 MW per charging gun<\/strong>. Zhao described the development as part of ZEEKR\u2019s ongoing effort to lead the transition to ultra-fast charging infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zhao outlined the company\u2019s progress since 2021, when ZEEKR started with 260 kW chargers and quickly scaled up to 600 kW in 2022<\/strong>, followed by 800 kW in 2023<\/strong>. The upcoming 1.2 MW charger marks a major leap in charging capabilities, extending ZEEKR\u2019s ambitions in the ultra-fast charging space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While ZEEKR currently lacks a production EV capable of utilizing 1.2 MW speeds<\/strong>, unlike BYD which is launching two compatible models this April, the announcement underscores ZEEKR\u2019s long-term vision to push industry boundaries. The actual charging performance will depend on the vehicle\u2019s electrical architecture<\/strong>, particularly voltage and thermal management systems, to safely and efficiently handle such high power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
