With recent updates to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, Apple<\/a> has made significant changes to its Mail app across all devices. If you’re not a fan of the new layout and features, the good news is you can bring back the classic look and feel. Here’s how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s Changed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Apple introduced Priority Messages<\/strong> in iOS 18.1 for devices with Apple Intelligence. Then, with iOS 18.2, came Categories<\/strong> \u2014 automatically sorting emails into Primary<\/strong>, Transactions<\/strong>, Updates<\/strong>, and Promotions<\/strong> \u2014 along with contact photos and business logos in your inbox. iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4 rolled these changes out universally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not everyone is on board. Many users find the new setup overcomplicated, inconsistent, and disruptive to their existing email workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Turn Off Mail Categories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Categories don\u2019t remove emails from your inbox but visually reorganize them, which can be confusing \u2014 especially when messages show up in multiple sections or badge counts feel off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To remove categories <\/strong>On iPhone\/iPad:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Open the Mail app.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Tap the three-dot\u00a0More<\/strong>\u00a0button in the top-right.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Select\u00a0List View<\/strong>\u00a0to go back to a standard chronological inbox.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    On Mac:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Click the\u00a0More<\/strong>\u00a0button (three dots) at the top of your inbox.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Uncheck\u00a0Show Mail Categories<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Alternatively, go to Mail \u279d View \u279d Show Mail Categories<\/strong> in the menu bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This change is instant, and you can switch back anytime using the same steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      How to Disable Contact Photos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      While meant to help identify senders, contact photos can clutter your inbox \u2014 especially when missing or misassigned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      To disable on iPhone\/iPad:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Go to\u00a0Settings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Scroll down and tap\u00a0Apps<\/strong>, then select\u00a0Mail<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Under “Message List,” toggle off\u00a0Show Contact Photos<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        On Mac:<\/strong>Go to Mail \u279d View<\/strong>, and uncheck Contact Photos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        In iOS 18.5 (currently in beta), Apple will make it easier to disable this feature directly from the Mail app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        How to Turn Off Priority Messages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        Priority Messages aim to surface important emails first using AI \u2014 but the results can be unreliable, sometimes highlighting spam or phishing emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        To disable <\/strong>On iPhone\/iPad:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Tap the\u00a0More<\/strong>\u00a0button in your inbox.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Uncheck\u00a0Show Priority<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
