These systems are incredibly convenient for homeowners familiar with routines, voice commands, and access to the home hub. However, challenges arise when house-sitters or visiting friends and family need to perform simple tasks like turning lights on or off.

Previously, Google Home users had two imperfect options: grant full access to others, potentially risking accidental device deletion or altered settings, or rely on inconsistent responses from the voice assistant. Recognizing these limitations, Google has taken a significant step toward solving the problem by testing user levels within Google Home. This feature is currently available only to select users enrolled in Google’s Public Preview beta testing program.

Two User Levels for Smarter Control

Google’s new user levels—Admin and Member—introduce a hierarchy of permissions for shared access. While user levels are common in software, their integration into smart home systems marks an exciting development.

Admin Access:
Admins retain full control, similar to the access previously available to all users. They can add or remove devices, relocate them within the app, rename them, and configure automations. Essentially, Admins have “full access.” Although there seems to be little difference between the “Admin” and “Owner” roles, certain settings might remain exclusive to the Owner, who originally set up the device or software.

Member Access:
Members have more restricted permissions, focusing on basic device operation. For example, they can run devices like robot vacuums but can’t add new ones. Interestingly, Members can modify personal settings such as face and voice recognition.
Members can also receive two optional permissions:

Activity Access: Allows them to view a device’s activity history.

Settings Access: Provides limited configuration options, including basic settings adjustments and the creation of automations.

How to Add Admins and Members

To use this feature, you must first enroll in Google’s Public Preview program. Once enrolled:

Open the Google Home app and navigate to Settings.

Select the new Household and Access menu.

Tap the “+” icon in the upper-right corner.

Enter the email address of the person you wish to invite.

The recipient will receive an email invitation. They’ll need to install the Google Home app, but they don’t need to be part of the Public Preview program themselves.

By introducing these user levels, Google Home makes smart home sharing safer and more practical. Admins maintain complete control, while Members gain essential functionality without risking accidental changes to the system. Although still in beta, this development is a promising leap toward more inclusive and secure smart home management.

Smart home technology eliminates the need to manually flip a light switch or adjust the thermostat.
