Building One of Europe\u2019s Most Powerful Supercomputers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The new supercomputer<\/strong> will reportedly be capable of performing 115 billion of billions of calculations per second<\/strong>, a significant leap from the 0.5 billion of billions<\/strong> handled by Europe\u2019s top supercomputers<\/strong> just last year. Sharka credits this massive performance boost<\/strong> to Nvidia\u2019s Blackwell chips<\/strong>, which offer 35 times more computing power<\/strong> while consuming 25 times less energy<\/strong> than previous models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data center will feature 80 of Nvidia\u2019s GB200 NVL72 servers<\/strong>, each equipped with 72 Blackwell chips<\/strong>, positioning it among Europe\u2019s most advanced AI computing facilities.
“Keeping the current pace, we aim to complete the project this summer,”<\/strong> Sharka said, highlighting that southern Italy\u2019s surplus of renewable energy<\/strong> played a key role in selecting the location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expanding Investment and AI Innovation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The scale of the project has led iGenius<\/strong> to extend its funding round<\/strong> beyond its initial \u20ac650 million<\/strong> target. Founded in 2016<\/strong>, iGenius is one of Europe\u2019s few AI unicorns<\/strong>, competing with France\u2019s Mistral<\/strong> and Germany\u2019s DeepL<\/strong> in the highly competitive AI landscape<\/strong>.
Alongside the data center, iGenius also introduced Colosseum 355B<\/strong>, a large language model (LLM)<\/strong> optimized for industries with strict data protection and compliance requirements<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike OpenAI<\/strong>, iGenius develops open-source AI models<\/strong> designed to run on customer-owned infrastructure<\/strong>, allowing businesses to maintain full control over their data<\/strong>. This approach is particularly appealing to companies in finance, heavy industry, and government sectors<\/strong>, where tight AI regulations<\/strong> often restrict cloud-based solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
