Google’s New ‘Simplify’ Feature for iOS – Making Complex Text Easier to Understand

Google is introducing a new feature called “Simplify” for its iOS app, designed to make complex or technical text on web pages more understandable. This tool uses AI to refine dense passages without requiring users to leave the page, integrating directly into the Google app for a seamless experience.

Simplify is powered by Gemini, a large language model developed by Google Research. This model uses a prompt refinement approach to break down challenging language into simpler, more digestible text while maintaining critical details and accuracy. According to Google, this approach aims to improve comprehension and retention by providing clear, concise versions of complex information.

To use the Simplify feature, users can simply select the text they want to simplify on a web page within the Google app and tap the “Simplify” icon that appears. The selected content is then transformed into a more straightforward version without losing the essential context.

Google’s research blog shares an example of what this feature could look like. For example, a passage like:

“The complex pathology of this condition involves emphysematous destruction of lung parenchyma, diffuse interstitial fibrosis, changes in the composition of lung immune cells, increased production of immunomodulatory factors, and the prominent remodeling of pulmonary vasculature.”

Might be simplified to:

“This condition involves damage to the lung tissue from emphysema, widespread scarring (fibrosis), changes in immune cells, increased production of substances that control the immune system, and significant changes in lung blood vessels.”

Google’s intention with this feature is to make it easier for people to grasp complex topics they might encounter while learning online. This approach is designed to balance readability with accuracy, ensuring the integrity of the original information is preserved.

Simplify is rolling out to iOS users this week, expanding the set of AI-driven tools available within the Google ecosystem.
