Microsoft has opened Windows Update to third-party applications through a new orchestration platform. This platform allows developers to deliver updates in coordination with Windows updates.

Most third-party applications currently manage updates independently, using custom-built mechanisms that handle installers, notifications, and timing based on user activity. Microsoft aims to replace this fragmented approach with a unified system.
To use the orchestration platform, developers must register as update providers, supply a path to an executable file that scans for updates, and provide update data via application programming interfaces (APIs).

Once integrated, the orchestrator schedules downloads and installations based on user activity, system performance, battery status, and other factors.
Third-party applications can display update notifications through native Windows Update notifications. Users can view app update history in Settings, and a unified log and diagnostic framework will apply to all updates.
Enterprise applications can support admin policy management for deadlines and notifications by leveraging Microsoft’s systems.
The platform supports MSIX/APPX packaged applications and certain custom Win32 applications. Developers can join a private preview after onboarding their installers through APIs.
