If you work in the oil and gas, mining, or chemical industries, you know that standard two-way radios simply won’t meet your workplace needs. What you need are intrinsically safe devices, and the MOTOTRBO DP4000 Ex series was purpose-built for this exact reason.
The core lineup of this series is very straightforward, featuring two main models:
- DP4401 Ex: The non-display version. Simple and ruggedly built, this radio features three programmable buttons and supports up to 64 channels.
- DP4801 Ex: The full-featured version, equipped with a color display and a full keypad. It supports up to 1,000 channels, text messaging, caller ID, and advanced menu navigation.
Both models are available in VHF (136–174 MHz) and UHF (403–470 MHz) versions, with transmit power capped at 1 W for safety reasons.
In addition, there are “Ma” variants designed specifically for underground mining: the DP4401 Ex Ma and DP4801 Ex Ma. They share the same hardware architecture as the standard versions, but comply with different certification standards.
Are Their Accessories Interchangeable?
Yes, most accessories across the DP4000 Ex series are cross-compatible. Both models can use the same batteries (such as NNTN8359 or NNTN8840 IMPRES), chargers, antennas, remote speaker microphones, and heavy-duty headsets.
However, there are a few exceptions:
- Carrying Cases: Carrying cases differ slightly due to the design differences between display and non-display models.
- Antennas: Antennas must match your specific frequency band (VHF or UHF). Antennas for different frequency bands cannot be swapped, even if the connectors match physically.
At the same time, standard (non-Ex certified) DP4000e or DP4000 series accessories are not interchangeable with Ex models. ATEX-certified accessories are mandatory in hazardous areas. Standard DP4000e accessories might fit physically, but they lack the intrinsic safety ratings required for Ex environments.
