iPadOS 26.2 Refines Multitasking With Improved Slide Over and New App Placement Options

With the third beta of iPadOS 26.2, Apple has introduced several refinements to multitasking on the iPad.

iPadOS 26.1 reintroduced Slide Over, a major multitasking view that was removed in iPadOS 26. In iPadOS 26.2, Slide Over behaves more similarly to its earlier implementation, and the update adds new options for replacing apps in tiled layouts.

When using Windowed mode or Stage Manager, apps can be dragged into different multitasking views, including Slide Over. Apps can be pulled from the Dock, Spotlight, or the App Library.

Dragging an app to the left or right side of the screen activates a tiled view similar to Split View. Dragging further to either side places it in Slide Over. Visual indicators show when an app is positioned for left, right, or Slide Over placement.

If a Slide Over window or tiled view is already active, you can drag another app onto an existing app to replace it. While stacking multiple Slide Over apps is still not supported, iPadOS 26.2 restores the ability to drag apps into multitasking positions much as it worked in iPadOS 18.
