Google is preparing to release a mandatory software update for a subset of Pixel 6A devices to address a battery overheating risk, following a similar measure applied earlier this year to the Pixel 4A. According to a statement from Google’s Alex Moriconi, the update will activate new battery management features that limit capacity and reduce charging performance after the device reaches 400 charge cycles. Affected users will be contacted directly by Google in the coming month.

The move follows reports of overheating incidents, including at least two cases where Pixel 6A units allegedly caught fire, one of them described as having “spontaneously combusted” during the night. Strings found in the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 code suggest that Google is building in alerts for Pixel 6A users, although the linked support page is not yet live.
Separately, Google has also launched an extended repair program for the Pixel 7A, targeting battery swelling issues. Covered symptoms include device bulging, case separation, or abnormal battery drain. The program provides free battery replacement for eligible cases, but devices with liquid damage, cracks, or unrelated issues are excluded.
Users must complete a verification process on the program’s website. If approved, they can mail in the device or visit an authorized repair center. In select countries (excluding the US and India) where repair services are unavailable, Google will offer financial compensation:
- $200 equivalent for out-of-warranty devices
- $300 toward a new Pixel
- $456 payout for in-warranty devices
