GoPro Launches Opt-In AI Training Program

GoPro has introduced an opt-in program allowing subscribers to license their cloud-stored videos to technology companies developing artificial intelligence systems. Creators whose footage is licensed will receive 50% of the revenue generated from GoPro’s partners.

Participation is voluntary. Only subscribers who choose to join will be considered, and they can manage which videos are included or opt out at any time. Nicholas Woodman, GoPro’s founder and CEO, stated that the program is intended to help creators benefit financially from the growing demand for authentic video data to train AI models.

GoPro’s cloud currently stores more than 450 petabytes of footage from around the world, representing a large dataset for AI developers seeking to improve perception and response systems.

Value of Drone and FPV Footage

GoPro’s customer base is diverse, but first-person view (FPV) drone footage offers particular value for AI training. These videos provide:

  • Dynamic movement: FPV drones capture perspectives impossible for ground-based cameras by moving rapidly through complex environments.
  • Varied environments: Footage spans diverse locations, from mountains to industrial sites, offering a wide range of textures, lighting, and obstacles.
  • Precision and speed: High-frame-rate aerial recordings are useful for motion prediction and object tracking.

Cameras such as the GoPro Hero, Hero11 Black Mini, and Bones are widely used in FPV setups, making drone footage a significant component of the company’s library.

Program Details

  • Rollout: Initially available to an invitation-only group of U.S. subscribers, with plans for broader access.
  • Content control: Users opt in through the GoPro Quik app or website and can select or deselect videos. A seven-day period after upload allows removal from eligibility.
  • Ownership: Creators retain intellectual property rights. GoPro receives only a license to distribute selected videos to AI partners.
  • Payments: Compensation is provided only if a video is licensed. Revenue is split 50/50, with payouts available through bank transfer, PayPal, Venmo, prepaid cards, or gift cards.
  • Privacy: GoPro states that it will work only with AI companies that comply with applicable privacy laws and guidelines.

Not all participants will earn income, as only licensed clips qualify for payouts.
